Engine Update — Week of June 1, 2026
Week of June 1, 2026
What the data showed this week
Research across 680 million AI citations this week confirmed what we have been watching build for six months: the correlation between Google organic ranking and AI citation has broken down. In mid-2025, 76% of AI Overview citations came from sites ranked in Google’s top 10. By early 2026 that figure sits between 17% and 38%. Moz reports that 88% of Google AI Mode citations now go to pages outside the organic top 10 entirely.
Google’s I/O 2026 announcements confirmed this is structural. Search is now built on Gemini 3.5 Flash agents. AI Mode crossed 1 billion monthly users. These systems select sources based on extractability, entity consistency, and third-party validation. They don’t rank pages the way the old algorithm did.
Recommendation engine updates this week
Two weight changes went live in the engine after this week’s analysis.
Schema weight increased for all practice types. Pages with FAQ schema see 2.8x higher citation rates across platforms. The engine now flags missing or incomplete JSON-LD as a high-priority fix rather than a medium one, particularly for LocalBusiness, Organization, and Article schema types. FAQ rich results were retired May 7, 2026, but the schema still drives AI citation rates significantly, so we kept it in the recommendation set with updated messaging.
Off-site authority weight increased for B2B practice types. For accountants, RIA advisors, and legal practices, Perplexity is now the primary citation target. It delivers the largest visibility lift per unit of optimization for B2B audiences, and its citation logic leans heavily on Reddit and community forum presence at 46.7% of top citations. For consumer-facing practices like dental and optometry, Google AI Overviews remains the primary target.
One thing to act on this week
73% of practices ranking on Google’s page one have zero AI mentions. If your practice has SEO coverage but you have never checked AI citation coverage, you almost certainly have a gap. The fastest way to close it: a clean FAQ page with five to seven direct-answer questions, LocalBusiness schema, and a check that your name, address, and phone match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, and provincial regulator listing. Those three changes account for the majority of the citation lift we see in practices moving from zero to cited.
